Using het for general situations

In Dutch, het can be used to talk about general situations, conditions, or circumstances. In this case, het does not refer to a specific noun. It refers to the whole situation.

Dutch often uses Het is … to describe:

• the weather
• the time
• feelings or moods
• general situations

Examples

• Het is koud. – It’s cold.
• Het is laat. – It’s late.
• Het is leuk hier. – It’s nice here.
• Het is druk in de winkel. – It’s busy in the shop.
• Het is moeilijk. – It’s difficult.
• Het is rustig. – It’s calm/quiet.

Goedemorgen! Vandaag is het wisselvallig weer in Nederland.
In de ochtend is het droog en schijnt de zon.
De temperatuur ligt tussen 14 en 18 graden.
In de middag komt er meer bewolking en in het westen kan het gaan regenen.
Er staat een matige wind uit het zuiden.
Vanavond wordt het kouder, met temperaturen rond de 12 graden.

• Morgen wordt het zonnig en droog. – Tomorrow it will be sunny and dry.
• De temperatuur ligt rond de 20 graden. – The temperature is around 20 degrees.
• In het noorden is het bewolkt met kans op regen. – In the north it’s cloudy with a chance of rain.
• Het blijft droog tot de avond. – It stays dry until the evening.
• Er waait een stevige wind uit het westen. – A strong west wind is blowing.

Tip: As a beginner, it helps to listen to Dutch weather forecasts (TV/radio/online) and notice repeated words and phrases.
